Hey everyone I started officiating volleyball recently and I can across a situation I wasn't so familiar with.
In a set, the libero has already replaced M1 and M2. When the M1 comes into the game for the second time, while in zone 3 the coach calls for a substitute. M1 is replaced by a new player from the bench M3. When M3 rotates to zone 1 Libero replaced M3 and M2 came into zone 4.
My question is: Is that a legal libero replacement? I was under the impression that M3 would have to sub out of the game for M1, as I have interpreted the rules as Liberos may only replace the player that replaced them earlier in the set.
The coach and R1 said the replacement was fine, and no sub was necessary. I went with it, but just looking for some clarification, as it seems similar to when a team elects to use a serving specialist for a middle: The serving specialist subs in for the middle in zone 1, serves, then subs out with that middle so that the middle can complete the libero replacement.
Thanks in advance for the help!
